HILT: SEARCH TIPS

Simple Search

Enter single or multiple terms.

  1. The system will first look for exact matches for all terms entered.
  2. If no results are found, the system will look for the term and any characters which may follow it using pattern matching. For example if the search term is ‘sign’ the system will then retrieve ‘signing’, ‘signed’ etc.
  3. In the event that no results are found following this, the system will adopt a pattern matching approach again, looking for the term with any characters after and before it. For example, the term ‘sign’ may result in ‘assign’, ‘assigned’, ‘assigning’ etc. being retrieved.

Phrase Searching

Enter a phrase contained within quotation marks ("eg").This should be used where a phrase such as eg. Computer programming is to be treated as a single topic as opposed to two distinct terms.

Free Text Searching

Enter a natural language sentence. The system will parse this query, remove stop words such as the, in, and etc, and run a search on the individual terms entered. The results will then be merged and returned to the user. If stop words such as ‘and’ are crucial to the topic being searched eg. "rock and roll" then the key phrase should be enclosed in double quotation marks as shown here.
